Event Details

Please join us on May 10th at 1:00 for a discussion of Between Two Fires:Truth, Ambition, and Compromise in Putin's Russia by Joshua Yaffa. In this book the author helps us to understand what it's actually like to live and work  in Russia, told through gripping and disturbing stories of life under the oppressive regime of Vladimir Putin.

To tell the story Between Two Fires chronicles the lives of individual citizens who understand their dreams are only realized through varying degrees of cooperation with the Russian government. The author illustrates how citizens shape their lives around the demands of a volatile, corrupt, repressive state in order to reach their goals. From this perspective Yaffa offers urgent lessons about the true nature of modern authoritarianism.

Joshua Yaffa is a correspondent for The New Yorker in Moscow. Between Two Fires was one of NPR's best books of 2020 and winner of the Orwell Prize, and New York Times Editor's Choice.
