Event Details

Discover a new perspective on Connecticut's Indigenous Peoples! Join The Institute for American Indian Studies for an engaging hands-on presentation to learn about and appreciate the rich history and stories of Connecticut's Indigenous Peoples. Don't miss this opportunity to develop a new understanding of Connecticut’s Indigenous Peoples' lives both in the past and the present.

About the Presentation: Much of what we learn about Connecticut’s past comes from a colonized perspective that has almost entirely left out the voices of Indigenous people who have called this land home for over 12,000 years. How knowledge about the past is preserved and passed down in different cultures affects how history is perceived. In this presentation, participants will get a more complete and accurate view of the history of Connecticut that takes the perspectives of Native people into account. Explore this topic and examine replicated tools, cultural items, and natural resources up close.

About the Speaker: Darlene Kascak, Schaghticoke Tribal Nation (STN) IAIS Educational Outreach Ambassador Storyteller is an experienced educator, tour guide, and Traditional Native American Storyteller who sheds light on the misconceptions and stereotypes surrounding her ancestors. Her truthful and compassionate teaching style offers both children and adults a fresh understanding of their lives in the past and present.

This program is presented in collaboration with the Clinton Human Rights Committee.

This event is a part of the Henry Carter Hull Library's "Paddling Together" series, made possible in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act, administered by the Connecticut State Library and support from Indian River Marina and Kayak.
