Oil and Water Do Mix

Sarah Baskin, watercolor; Kimberley Scoble, oil

About the exhibit:

Sarah Baskin paints intimate and serene impressionistic watercolor landscapes, seascapes and figurative paintings in the comfort of her studio and outside en plein air. In each image she paints, Sarah aspires to be a painter of light.

Kimberley Scoble paints beautiful representational oil paintings. Kimberley has been studying water’s reflective qualities and the effect that weather and time of day have in changing its appearance. Her oil paintings of boats and beaches show images both calm and turbulent.

About the artists:

Sarah Baskin is a Connecticut-based artist who paints impressionistic watercolor landscapes and seascapes. She is attracted to the transparency of watercolor and how the white of the paper shines through the paint. In each image she paints, Sarah aspires to be a painter of light, focusing on how the sunlight plays across the side of a building or how it sparkles on the snow or in the water and on how shadows stretch across a landscape. She also loves to paint outside en plein air in challenging conditions of changing light, moisture, wind, heat, and cold—and the occasional passerby—that force her to paint more quickly than she does in the studio and make her a better, looser painter.

Sarah has been juried into the Hudson Valley Plein Air Festival 2022, the Maine Audubon Society’s Brush with Nature: Plein Air Event and Art Auction 2022, the Connecticut Women Artists’ 2022 National Open Juried Exhibition, a number of exhibits at the Lyme Art Association and the Spectrum Art Gallery, the Autumn Arts Festival in Madison, CT, the Voice of Art’s Two/Three-Person Show in Litchfield, CT, and the Hands on the Land: Art and the Environment in the Connecticut River Valley Exhibit, co-sponsored by the Connecticut River Museum and the Lyme Art Association. The work she submitted to the Hands on the Land exhibit was purchased by the Connecticut River Museum for its permanent collection. Sarah has also been elected into membership in Connecticut Women Artists based on a portfolio review.

Sarah is a member of Connecticut Women Artists, the Lyme Art Association, the Connecticut Plein Air Painters Society, the Northwest Watercolor Society, Plein Air Painters of Maine and the Deer Isle Artists Association. She is the regional contact for the Acadia Region Chapter of Plein Air Painters of Maine.

Kimberley Scoble, a lifelong resident of Connecticut, is an oil painter who specializes in still life paintings, waterscapes, and pet portraiture. After receiving a BFA at the University of Connecticut, she experimented in watercolor and pastel, before returning to her first love, oil painting.

Much of her work over the past decade has focused on still life paintings. She uses an observational eye to capture the patterns light creates on a subject, or the varied textures that can be replicated in oil. Water has been her latest muse. Her work captures the differences that time of day and weather conditions can make on the same body of water, whether ocean, pond, or stream. She uses the differing mood of each painting to try to create an emotional response in the viewer. She also does commissioned pet portraiture and strives to capture that special bond between people and their pets. She has a realistic, yet painterly style, which lends itself perfectly to oil on canvas.
